Charles Dunlap

Charles Dunlap is passionate about creating environments with function and personality. Influenced by the late architect David Adler, designer Jean Royere, and landscape designer David Hicks, Charles uses traditional design principles in unexpected and contemporary ways. His travel throughout the world give him a unique understanding of many styles, and an exposure to unusual materials.

Equally at home creating cozy family spaces or reinventing a Chicago brownstone, Charles creates intuitive, organic and thoughtfully edited interiors. Charles began his career designing retail interiors at a large commercial firm, JGA, Inc. Working on a variety of projects, Charles began flexing his stylistic muscle and experimenting with an array of materials. He formed Dunlap Design Group in 2000.

Charles Dunlap earned the 2008 Brian Killian Rising Star award from Detroit Home magazine, and was voted “favorite designer” at the Birmingham Designer Showhouse. In addition, he has been featured in Beautiful Interiors, Detroit Home Magazine, Home & Design , Traditional Home magazines, and served as a consultant to ABC’s popular Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Charles has a BFA from Wayne State University, and is an Allied Member of the American Society of Interior Designers.

Emily King joined Dunlap Design as a summer intern in 2008. Since graduating from Central Michigan University, she has joined Dunlap Desgin as Design Assistant.

Well-executed interior design connects you and your surroundings. Our goal is to make each project representative of our clients’ tastes by combining new and existing elements to create a fresh, yet personal and evolved look. We are sensitive to the architecture, site, and the way our clients want to live. Beyond beauty, interior design should also reflect and enhance your Signature Lifestyle.

Phase 1: Design—We design your project, create floor plans and select materials and furnishings based upon your budget. We believe in closely collaborating with our clients and typically meet several times during this process. We will develop 3-D models which enable you to visualize your completed project. Following approval, we move into the “ordering and construction” phase.

Phase 2: Ordering and Construction – We order materials and furnishings while coordinating any necessary construction. Over the years, we have developed a network of talented and trusted artisans and builders who assist us in bringing your interior to life.

Phase 3: Installation – This is the final phase and, for clients, the most rewarding. Here, your new furnishings, drapery, and accessories are delivered and thoughtfully placed. This is where your Signature Lifestyle begins!

Fees – Although no two projects are the same, most often we work hourly in addition to the price of the materials, furniture, and furnishings we specify. We are often called to review drawings, select colors, or to answer specific design questions. For these services, we have a minimum consultation fee of $750.00.
