Charles Dunlap earns top 2008 Detroit Home magazine awardRoyal Oak designer recognized as rising star by panel of national judges ROYAL OAK, Mich, March 10, 2008 -- Interior designer Charles Dunlap is the 2008 winner of the Brian Killian Rising Star award. Dunlap received the prestigious nod February 28 at the fourth annual Detroit Home Design Awards held this year at the Max Fisher Music Center in Detroit. “I am so honored by recognition both from this amazing panel of judges and from my peers and colleagues throughout the Detroit Area,” said Dunlap. “I admired Brian Killian and am thankful to Detroit Home for this award.” The Brian Killian Rising Star award is named after the late interior designer whose Birmingham studio garnered international recognition, was beloved locally and served as a mentor to up and coming young professionals. Dunlap topped a list of 12 nominees and was judged by a panel of nationally recognized design experts. Criteria included the scope and depth of each designer’s work, length of experience, status within the local design community, peer recognition and, in Dunlap’s case, service to others. Jill Schumacher and Michelle Mio, last year’s Rising Star winners nominated Dunlap. “His interiors are inviting and comfortable with clean lines, modern lighting and attention to detail,” said Schumacher. Susan Zinger, vice president and general manager of the Michigan Design Center, noted Dunlap’s ability to “mix modern and traditional to create interiors that are sophisticated, warm and livable.” Judges cited Dunlap’s impressive portfolio, publicity in such magazines as Beautiful Interiors and Traditional Home, his volunteer work with ABC’s Extreme Home Makeover Home Edition and his successful interior design business, which is located in Royal Oak. This year’s judges were: Kevin Alter, architect and director of architecture programs at the University of Texas at Austin Grace Bonney, editor, designer and trend spotting author of designonline.com Carol Caughey, interior design program coordinator, Oregon State University Barry Dixon, tapped a top designer by House Beautiful magazine Sam Grawe, Dwell magazine editor-in-chief Bill Ingram, architect Jason Kontos, New York Spaces magazine editor-in-chief Linda O'Keefe, Metropolitan Home editor Dennis Rolland, Manhattan-based interior designer
